History


Corfu. The jewel of the Ionian 

The second-largest of the Ionian Islands, Corfu is also one of the most popular tourist destinations in all the Mediterranean.

The island is found in the most northwestern side of Greece, very close to Italy. Corfu had Venetian, British, and French rulers before becoming a part of the modern Kingdom of Greece in 1864.

Due to this rich heritage, Corfiot culture is rich and diverse, one of the reasons why it has become such a popular destination.

The Old Town became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2007.

Its winding, cobblestoned roads hide alleys, Churches, and ancient buildings that will amaze you. You can’t miss the Achilleion Palace, the residence of Elizabeth Sisi, the Empress of Austria, built-in 1891 in the village of Gastouri.

Other renowned spots you must visit in Town are Kanoni, Mon repo Estate, and the Paleopolis archaeological site.

At the Archaeological Museum, you will admire some of the most notable pieces of Ancient art found in Corfu: the Monumental pediment showing the mythical Gorgona, part of the Doric temple of Artemis, which is absolutely impressive.

And then, get away from your worries while visiting Corfu shore.

There are plenty of beaches where you can relax: many of them are child friendly with gently sloping sands and shallow waters, others are paradises for water sports enthusiasts.

Many have little jetties, you can also get here by boat, and will find a good selection of typical seafront taverns and bars for snack time, lunch or a sunset toast. The spending on natural views of Corfu did not go unnoticed by film producers.

Corfu has staged many high profiles and blockbuster movies. Mention must be made of 1981 hit James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only and the television series ‘’The Durells’’
